Nope, not quite slurpies, but almost. It’s your music news for the 11th of July! Enjoy
VAN HALEN’S WIFE SPILLS THE BEANS.
Eddie Van Halen’s ex-wife and current Jenny Craig spokesperson, actress Valerie Bertinelli has written a memoir. In the pages of Losing It: And Gaining My Life Back One Pound At A Time, Bertinelli tells her story about growing up in front of the camera, her 20-year marriage to Van Halen, her struggles with depression, and her life-long battle with weight and self-esteem issues. She said, “Writing a book is an exciting new adventure for me. I’ve grown up in and out of the public eye, survived some tough times, learned some important lessons, and come out—as has my entire family—in a great place. I think it’s a recipe for a good book. Ironically, as there’s less of me, I have more to say.” Losing It… will be published by Free Press, an imprint of Simon and Schuster, Inc., in April.
INFAMOUS GUITARS COME TO CLAPTON’S GUITAR FESTIVAL
At Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival you will not only be able to check out some great music, you will also be able to see some great guitars. The festival has partnered with Guitar Center to bring three of the most infamous and valuable guitars on site for fans to check out. Clapton’s legendary “Blackie,” his “335,” and Stevie Ray Vaughan’s “Lenny” will be displayed at the show. Net proceeds from the July 28th show in Chicago will benefit The Crossroads Centre in Antigua, a treatment and education facility founded by Clapton for chemically dependent persons.
BLONDIE LENDS SONGS TO SUSAN.
NME reports Blondie has given the okay to have several of their songs used in the musical Desperately Seeking Susan. The show, which is based on the 1985 film starring Madonna, will feature Blondie’s “Heart of Glass,” “Atomic,” “One Way of Another,” “Dreaming,” “The Tide Is High” and a new song by frontwoman Debbie Harry. Harry described the show, saying, “It’s a live show so it is going to be different to the film, probably more lighthearted.” The musical is scheduled to open in London’s West End October 12th.
ONLY 19-MILLION PEOPLE WATCHED LIVE EARTH CONCERTS ON TV
The Associated Press reports that almost 19-million people watched Live Earth on NBC and its affiliates. It fell short of the two billion event organizers had hoped for. On the other hand, the organizers’ estimate was also supposed to include online viewers, whereas the 19 million figure only includes viewers who watched at least six minutes of the telecasts.
DAVE MATTHEWS’ CLEANS UP THE POO.
Dave Matthews and his wife Ashley just welcomed a new child into the world on June 19th. When the Dave Matthews Band played Live Earth this past weekend, Matthews talked to reporters about how he and his wife are going green, even in terms of caring for their new baby boy August Oliver Matthews. “We use cloth diapers for our new baby, that’s the number three pile of waste.” Disposable diapers might not be the third worst waste problem in landfills, but according to TheNewParentsGuide.com, it does take around 80,000 pounds of plastic and over 200,000 trees a year to manufacture disposable diapers for American babies alone.
COURTNEY LOVE DEBUTS NEW SONGS
Courtney Love debuted some new music off her upcoming album, Nobody’s Daughter, at a gig in London on Monday night. New songs included “Never Go Hungry Again,” “Pacific Coast Highway” and the title track. She also played Hole tracks, “Doll Parts” and “Celebrity Skin.” Love worked with former 4 Non Blondes singer Linda Perry on Nobody’s Daughter. A release date has not yet been set.
BONO TELLS MTV STAFF TO PUT A BULLET IN ITS COLLECTIVE HEAD
Bono was the surprise guest at an all-hands-on-deck meeting for the staff of MTV Networks yesterday, where he told them in order to stay with the times they needed to “put a bullet” in their collective “head.” He was speaking metaphorically, of course. He explained that the only reason U2 has remained successful is because of their willingness to kill off current versions of the band in favor of re-invention. He told the two-thousand person, capacity crowd at New York’s Nokia Theatre, “Imagine if there was no MTV now: What would it be tomorrow?” Highlights of his appearance included spot-on imitations of Bill Clinton’s American accent, referring to his conversation with George Bush as a “row” and responding to the question of one breathy female MTV staffer by saying, “You have an amazing voice.” He ended with the recommendation to MTV exec Van Toffler that staffers be allowed to give performance reviews to their superiors.
FORMER ALICE COOPER BAND GUITARIST HAD HEART ATTACK
According to Blabbermouth.net, Alice Cooper’s former Alice Cooper Band guitarist Dick Wagner recently suffered a very serious heart attack. Dick Wagner’s business partner Suzy Michelson told reporters that, Wagner “has been in ICU all week on life support, but I am very relieved to tell you he is finally coming back to us! As of today, we expect Dick to fully recover. Dick is not only a brilliant songwriter and phenomenal guitar player, but also a very special and beautiful man. If you want to send Dick a message you can do it via his web site or MySpace page and they will be passed on.”
GREAT WHITE GOES ON TOUR

Music News… On this day in…
AL GORE DEFENDS LIVE EARTH.
Former Vice President and active environmentalist Al Gore is the man behind the upcoming Live Earth concerts, which will feature some of the biggest names in music and will take place in spots around the world on July 7th. And as hard as it might be to believe, he has come under fire regarding the event. Live Aid organizer Bob Geldof feels the effort lacks goals, to which Gore has responded, saying, “We will have very specific goals that will be very significant and hard-hitting. We will announce those before the concert then emphasize them heavily during the concert.” The U-S leg of the Live Earth concerts will take place at New Jersey’s Giants Stadium and will feature performances by the Smashing Pumpkins, Kelly Clarkson, Fall Out Boy, The Police and more.
Metallica Added to Live Aid
…Metallica have been added to the bill for the London leg of next month’s Live Earth concerts. The band let the cat outta the bag yesterday via their Web site, Metallica.com. Metallica will join the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters and more at the event. The show will take place at London’s Wembley Stadium on July 7th and is completely sold-out, but Metallica will offer their performance for download shortly after the show, with the proceeds going to benefit climate charities. The U-S show will take place at New Jersey’s Giant Stadium on July 7th as well.
JANET RENO PUT TOGETHER A CD
Janet Reno, yup that Janet Reno, has finally finished compiling her Song of America collection. The compilation is designed to tell the history of the country through song, from 1492 to modern times. The former U-S Attorney General began the project two years ago, choosing artists to interpret beloved songs for new versions. John Mellencamp, Blind Boys of Alabama, Martha Wainwright, The Black Crowes, Shortee and Andrew Bird are amongst the genre spanning artists who appear on the disc. The 50-song, three-CD set is scheduled to be released September 18th.
BON JOVI’S WAL-MART SOUNDCHECK.
Bon Jovi’s new album Lost Highway is out now and the band will play a series of dates at the Prudential Center in New Jersey beginning October 25th. But if you can’t get out to New Jersey, the band has the next best thing for ya. The boys performed a Wal-Mart Soundcheck Session and fans can check it out now. The Jersey natives play some old favorites, including ”Who Says You Can’t Go Home,” “Wanted Dead or Alive” and “It’s My Life,” as well as some stuff from the newly released album, like “(You Want To) Make a Memory” and “Lost Highway.” Hit up SoundCheck.WalMart.com to watch.
SLAYER LET MANSON CALL THE SHOTS.
Marilyn Manson and Slayer are set to go out on a co-headlining tour this summer, but it seems that Slayer isn’t so keen on certain aspects of the venture. The trek is set to kick off on July 25th in West Palm Beach, Florida and fans can expect to see Manson close every show. In an interview with MTV News, Slayer guitarist Kerry King says that plan has him a little worried, “It’s definitely going to be weird. My whole thing is, it depends on what Manson plays, whether our kids stay or not. If he comes out and plays ‘Tainted Love,’ half the place is going to leave. No offense to Manson — I’m just saying what’s up. I want him to come out and kick ass, because I’m an old-school fan. He can succeed on this tour, if he chooses the right set.” King also revealed that Slayer hoped to once again name the trek the Unholy Alliance tour, but Manson wasn’t having it, “[This tour has] been in the works for a good part of this year, and the way it started out was, we were looking to do another Unholy Alliance this summer. Then, when we found out we’d probably be touring with Manson, he didn’t want to call it [the Unholy Alliance]. So, we were like, ‘Fine, man. Let’s just go out and do a big tour.’ He basically said [playing festival runs] wasn’t who he is anymore, and we were like, ‘All right.’ It didn’t make much sense to me, but that’s who he is now, I guess.” For better or worse, the tour will begin on July 25th in West Palm Beach, Florida.
THE CRUE WILL SUE.
MTV.com reports Mötley Crüe has filed a 20-million dollar lawsuit on Monday against manager Carl Stubner, who also represents Tommy Lee. The boys claims Stubner “hurt the band’s reputation, diverted revenue and mismanaged Lee’s career.” The lawsuit says Stubner allegedly “promoted Lee’s solo activities to the detriment of the band, and at the same time, mismanaged Lee’s career so as to harm the Mötley Crüe brand and Lee’s reputation as a musician and bandmember.” According to the site, a call to Sanctuary Group, which is also named as a defendant in the suit, was not immediately returned.
KEVIN CRONIN FEELS THE PASSION.
REO Speedwagon recently released Find Your Own Way Home, which is their first new album in about 11 years. And Kevin Cronin is happy with the record’s sound. “You know, when I listen to this record, I feel the passion in not only the songwriting but in the performances.” REO’s single “I Need To Fall” off Find Your Own Way Home is climbing its way up the AC charts. Find Your Own Way Home, is in stores now.
SANTANA’S SON SINGS HIS SONG.
Carlos Santana’s son Salvador recorded “Evil Ways” for an album called Songs for My Father. The record features the musical children of famous musicians paying tribute to their dads by performing one of their songs. Salvador told us that he chose “Evil Ways” because so many people have already redone many of his father’s other songs, like “Black Magic Woman.” He also shared how he molded the infamous song into his own. “To not take it note for note, but just take the best of the best, the best of the retro version and update it so that people maybe closer to our age can relate to it, you know, and also people from my dad’s and the generations before that were into the original version. They’d be like, ‘This is cool. This is 2007 ‘Evil Ways’ not, you know, a remake of it or anything.’” The album is available at Target stores now.
PUMPKINS RETURN TO TV.
The Smashing Pumpkins will be returning to your TV screens early next month for the first time in seven years. The band will be playing The Late Show with David Letterman on Monday, July 9th and Friday, July 13th. Their first album in seven years, Zeitgeist, comes out on July 10th.
SWEDEN TO PAY FOR METAL.
A Swedish heavy metal fan has had his musical preferences officially classified as a disability. According to Sweden’s paper, The Local, “the results of a psychological analysis” will allow the metal lover to have his income supplemented by state benefits. Roger Tullgren from Hässleholm in southern Sweden, recently became a dishwasher at a local restaurant but because heavy metal dominates so many aspects of his life, the Employment Service has agreed to pay part of Tullgren’s salary. Tullgren explained his situation saying, “The fact that I am so into music has affected my work situation to the extent that I have had to quit some jobs.” The Local reports that Tullgren, 42, claims he attended almost three hundred concerts last year.
Heaven and Hell
Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice got back together as and toured the U-S this spring. Things went so well they have decided to continue their reunion with a fall tour of the States. And when we last spoke with him, Dio was very happy about hitting the road. (Actuality #4)"You know the joy of being able to play together is what keeps us young and alive anyway. And so we’re looking forward to it.” This leg of Heaven and Hell’s tour is set to begin September 5th and is scheduled to include sets from Alice Cooper and Queensryche. Tickets for the first 12 dates go on sale this weekend. Check out HeavenAndHell.com for all the details…
BOSTON Tribute
…Plans for a tribute concert in memory of former Boston lead singer Brad Delp are still up in the air. The Boston Globe reports that an announcement was made yesterday saying the concert would be held August 19th and original Boston members Sib Hashian, Barry Goudreau, Fran Sheehan, Fran Cosmo and Tom Scholz would play together at the show. But a second announcement was made shortly after the first excluding Scholz’s name from the line-up. Then Scholz tried to clear things up by saying Boston would play but he didn’t specify which Boston line-up. He also said that Michael Sweet of Stryper, Mickey Thomas of Starship and Sammy Hagar have all offered to sing in Delp’s place. We’ll keep you posted…

What’s Happening This Week in the Music World- Sanjaya and a Bowl Cut and much more.
Music News
Scavenged from VH1, Billboard by jyospe@1031jack.com
KFC GIVES SANJAYA AN EXTRA CRISPY OFFER TO DO A BOWL CUT. One thing that American Idol contestant Sanjaya is best known for is his hair, and Kentucky Fried Chicken wants to take advantage of that. Hoping to promote their Famous Bowls, KFC has made an offer to Sanjaya. The chicken cookers will give the singer five-thousand dollars cash and a lifetime supply of the Famous Bowls as well as make a charitable donation in his name to Colonel’s Scholars if Sanjaya sports a bowl hairdo during an upcoming Idol performance. On top of the other incentives, if he does his hair in the bowl do, KFC will give him a starring role in their next commercial. The company’s president wrote to Sanjaya, “The judges and critics may think you’re a long shot for a recording contract, but at KFC, we think you’re a real ‘original.’” Keep watching American Idol to see if Sanjaya steps up to the plate or chickens out. This week’s elimination airs tonight at 9 Eastern on FOX.
JOHNNY CASH’S FORMER HOME BURNS. According to a press release from Johnny Cash’s sister Joanne, the Hendersonville, Tennessee home that Johnny and June Carter Cash lived in for most of their marriage, burned down yesterday afternoon. The house is currently owned and being restored by Bee Gee Barry Gibb but the Hendersonville Fire Department told CMT News yesterday afternoon that the home was fully engulfed. The Nashville Tennessean reports that the home on Avondale Drive sustained heavy damage and nearly the entire local fire department was dispatched to the scene to fight the blaze, just northeast of Nashville. The fire began when construction workers were on the property, but as of press time, there was no known cause for the blaze. Fortunately, there were no injuries.
BON JOVI POSTPONES BOOK… Jon Bon Jovi’s biography has been “postponed indefinitely,” and so has his corresponding concert to benefit the Book Industry Foundation. According to the online media business magazine MediaBistro, no specific reason was given for the delay of Bon Jovi’s book, which is titled Believe. As for the June concert, which was to also feature Amy Grant, the head of the event coordination said that the publisher of the book “approached us with the firmest conviction and every belief that Mr. Bon Jovi would perform.” He added, “Unfortunately, as we all know in this business, things change fast and books do, on rare occasions, get postponed. This can sometimes be a bitter pill, especially for those of us who work in the event planning business.”…
…BUT BON JOVI WILL PLAY LIVE EARTH. The U-S portion of Live Earth will take place at New Jersey’s Giants Stadium. Bon Jovi will play at former Vice President Al Gore’s Live Earth concert amongst an eclectic line up that includes Roger Waters and The Police along with rap artists and country singers. Jon Bon Jovi once told us that… (Actuality #1) “A good song is a good song and it just defies formats and that’s the magic to songwriting.” So the audience should enjoy all the good songs from Kanye West, Fall Out Boy, AFI, Akon, Kelly Clarkson, Ludacris, Rihanna, the reunited Smashing Pumpkins, Dave Matthews Band, Alicia Keys, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, John Mayer, KT Tunstall and Melissa Etheridge who are among the other artists confirmed to perform at that event. Tickets for the New Jersey show will go on sale Monday at 10 AM through Ticketmaster.
BRANDY OUT OF TALENT. TMZ is reporting that Brandy has, in fact, been replaced by Sharon Osbourne as a judge on the upcoming season of America’s Got Talent. Osbourne was previously a judge on the U-K reality show The X-Factor. Earlier this year, Jerry Springer was chosen to replace Regis Philbin as the show’s host since Regis is recuperating from bypass surgery. The second season of America’s Got Talent is scheduled for this summer.

Scientists confirm validity of Islander fisherman’s pictures
Well, I suppose you clicked on this link expecting a story about an alien sighting, or about how the martians have finally landed and are slowly conquering such as in Orson Welles’ radio program “War of the Worlds.” Well, you’ve been duped by a classic APRIL FOOLS.
Now, How about some of the greatest April Fool’s of all time. Here’s 103.1 JACK fm’s top five.
#1: The Swiss Spaghetti Harvest
In 1957 the respected BBC news show Panorama announced that thanks to a very mild winter and the virtual elimination of the dreaded spaghetti weevil, Swiss farmers were enjoying a bumper spaghetti crop. It accompanied this announcement with footage of Swiss peasants pulling strands of spaghetti down from trees. Huge numbers of viewers were taken in, and many called up wanting to know how they could grow their own spaghetti trees. To this question, the BBC diplomatically replied that they should “place a sprig of spaghetti in a tin of tomato sauce and hope for the best.” Check out the actual broadcast archived on the BBC’s website. --MORE--
#2: Sidd Finch
In its April 1985 edition, Sports Illustrated published a story about a new rookie pitcher who planned to play for the Mets. His name was Sidd Finch and he could reportedly throw a baseball with startling, pinpoint accuracy at 168 mph (65 mph faster than anyone else has ever been able to throw a ball). Surprisingly, Sidd Finch had never even played the game before. Instead, he had mastered the “art of the pitch” in a Tibetan monastery under the guidance of the “great poet-saint Lama Milaraspa.” Mets fans everywhere celebrated at their teams’s amazing luck at having found such a gifted player, and Sports Illustrated was flooded with requests for more information. But in reality this legendary player only existed in the imagination of the writer of the article, George Plimpton. --MORE--
#3: Instant Color TV
In 1962 there was only one tv channel in Sweden, and it broadcast in black and white. The station’s technical expert, Kjell Stensson, appeared on the news to announce that thanks to a newly developed technology, all viewers could now quickly and easily convert their existing sets to display color reception. All they had to do was pull a nylon stocking over their tv screen, and they would begin to see their favorite shows in color. Stensson then proceeded to demonstrate the process. Reportedly, hundreds of thousands of people, out of the population of seven million, were taken in. Actual color tv transmission only commenced in Sweden on April 1, 1970.
#4: The Taco Liberty Bell
In 1996 the Taco Bell Corporation announced that it had bought the Liberty Bell from the federal government and was renaming it the Taco Liberty Bell. Hundreds of outraged citizens called up the National Historic Park in Philadelphia where the bell is housed to express their anger. Their nerves were only calmed when Taco Bell revealed that it was all a practical joke a few hours later. The best line inspired by the affair came when White House press secretary Mike McCurry was asked about the sale, and he responded that the Lincoln Memorial had also been sold, though to a different corporation, and would now be known as the Ford Lincoln Mercury Memorial. --MORE--
#5: San Serriffe
In 1977 the British newspaper The Guardian published a special seven-page supplement in honor of the tenth anniversary of San Serriffe, a small republic located in the Indian Ocean consisting of several semi-colon-shaped islands. A series of articles affectionately described the geography and culture of this obscure nation. Its two main islands were named Upper Caisse and Lower Caisse. Its capital was Bodoni, and its leader was General Pica. The Guardian’s phones rang all day as readers sought more information about the idyllic holiday spot. Few noticed that everything about the island was named after printer’s terminology. The success of this hoax is widely credited with launching the enthusiasm for April Foolery that then gripped the British tabloids in the following decades.
